Brunswick street mural

grandfinal

This mural in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy is for Souvlaki King, a cafe/take away shop. The street has its own unique style based on its history as a "Bohemian" area. It is sometimes very artistic, sometimes just grungey with an impenetrable subculture.

This was approached differently to usual. I painted it freely without first sketching the layout to get a loose, spontaneous image of the area.

I also wanted to paint something a bit tongue in cheek, partly as a dig at the rubbish that is given credence as "modern" art. You could call it an "Ern Malley" painting. Except that I ended up really liking it.
