Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is not just the gaudy corner of grey London. It's also a clothing (coats) shop on Rathdowne Street, Nth Carlton in Melbourne with this engraved gold leaf sign. (features a mural too)

I found the reference photo for this picture of Piccadilly Circus in my old Encyclopaedia Brittanica of 1956. I liked it because you can see the buildings which are really quite beatiful and grand. Nowadays they are completely covered with huge advertising signs.

23 carat (water gilded) engraved, with black backing. The engraving technique can be seen in historical examples of glass gilding and is sometimes refered to as "verre eglomise" and "reverse foil engravings under glass".
